In 2015, the Environment Agency introduced the General Binding Rules for small sewage discharges in England. These rules state that as of 1 January 2020, septic tanks can no longer discharge directly into a watercourse, such as a river or stream. Any new septic tank installations must meet the British Standard BS EN 12566, which sets out requirements for small wastewater treatment systems.
